Invitation to the 2007 WDCA Workshop - September 15th at Brookfield East

You are cordially invited to the 2007 Wisconsin Debate Coaches’ Association Fall Workshop on Saturday, September 15th at Brookfield East High School. Sessions will be offered for Novice and Advanced Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and Public Forum debaters as well as new judges and coaches. Complete details are available below the fold.

The Basics:

The fall Wisconsin Debate Coaches’ Association coaches’ meeting will run concurrently with a workshop for debate students. You do not need to pre-register — simply show up with your students on Saturday morning and register between 8:00 and 8:30. When you arrive, please congregate in the cafeteria.

Schedule:

8:00-8:30: Registration (in Cafeteria)
8:45-9:45: Session 1
9:50-10:50: Session 2
10:55-11:55: Session 3

The coaches’ meeting will begin at 9:00 and hopefully conclude by noon.

Workshop Sessions:

Coaches/Judges Track:

Session 1/2: Intro To Policy Debate – Various Instructors
A basic introduction to policy debate for beginners. Coaches will attend session with novice students. (Amjad Asad & Ernest Chomicki for first half, Asad Asad & Ernest Chomicki for second half)

Session 3: Coaching and Judging - Jason Chapman
This session will give you a basic introduction to coaching a debate team and judging debates - it is a must for new coaches/judges.

Novice Policy Debate Track

Session 1/2: Intro To Policy Debate – Various Instructors
A basic introduction to policy debate for beginners and a refresher course for novices. (Amjad Asad & Ernest Chomicki for first half, Asad Asad & Ernest Chomicki for second half)

Session 3: This Year’s Topic: SSA – Ben Schultz
A basic introduction to this year’s resolution with special focus on the four novice limited topics.

Advanced Policy Debate Track

Session 1: Three Options

A. This Year’s Topic: SSA – Ben Schultz
A basic introduction to this year’s resolution for experienced students.

B. Debating The Disadvantage – Tyler Jackson
This session will review the basics of debating disadvantages before diving in to a more advanced discussion of DA strategy, answering DAs, and tips for constructing strong disadvantages.

C. The Counterplan: An Introduction – Asad Asad
Learn the basics of counterplans and how to debate them more effectively. This session will cover basic theory issues, strategies for effectively answering counterplans, and how to strategically deploy counterplans as part of your negative arsenal.

Session 2: Two Options

A. An Intro To The K – Ben Schultz
This session will offer an introduction to the theory and practice of critiques. Topics discussed will include theoretical issues, strategic concerns, answering critiques, and researching critiques.

B. Strategic Affirmative Debating – Tyler Jackson & Noah Trilling
Your job is to demonstrate the undesirability of the status quo. Learn how to do so with maximum strategic effect in this session including discussions of strategic 1AC construction, 2AC tips and tricks, and how to give winning rebuttals.

Session 3: Three Options

A. Strategic Negative Debating – Tyler Jackson & Amjad Asad
Want to know how to prepare more strategic 1NCs? Wish you could turn the negative block into an affirmative-killing weapon? This session will cover the basics of developing a winning negative strategy.

B. Debating The Disadvantage – Ernest Chomicki
This session will review the basics of debating disadvantages before diving in to a more advanced discussion of DA strategy, answering DAs, and tips for constructing strong disadvantages.

C. How To Do Effective Debate Research - Asad Asad
This session will teach all debaters to conduct better and more efficient research. Topics will include how to organize your research, what tools you should use, and how to maximize the quality of your research. This session is open to all debaters but is aimed at policy and PF students.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate Track

Session 1: Intro To LD – Brian Samuelson
A basic introduction to Lincoln-Douglas debate for new debaters and a refresher course for experienced debaters.

Session 2: The September/October Topic – Brian Samuelson
An introduction to the September/October death penalty resolution. This session will also cover basic approaches to analyzing resolutions and developing arguments.

Session 3: Advanced LD – Brian Samuelson & Noah Trilling
This session will cover more advanced techniques for Lincoln-Douglas debaters including strategic argument development, in-round tactics, and debate theory.

Public Forum Debate Track

Session 1: Intro To PF - Noah Trilling
A basic introduction to Public Forum debate for new debaters and a refresher course for experienced debaters.

Session 2: Constructing Winning Arguments - Amjad Asad
This session will teach students to develop stronger, more persuasive arguments. Discussion topics will include the basics of argumentation, how to tailor your arguments to typical PF judges, using evidence to support your positions, and impacting your arguments to the resolutional conflict.

Session 3: How To Do Effective Debate Research - Asad Asad
This session will teach all debaters to conduct better and more efficient research. Topics will include how to organize your research, what tools you should use, and how to maximize the quality of your research. This session is open to all debaters but is aimed at policy and PF students.
