Monday Meditation: WI Debate Persona of the Year

December 10, 2007 – 8:21 am by: Nick Bubb

Fossa Extinction Good—The Alternative is death.
    Croke, September ‘7
[Vicki. Madagascar Expert w/ National Geographic. "The Deadliest Carnivore" National Geographic. September 2007, Pg 31-32//JVOSS]
The fossa is a “killing machine ,” according to biologist Luke Dollar. It will go after the biggest prey it can sink its teeth into, even dominant female lemurs. “That takes guts,” Dollar says. ” ‘ You’re my body weight, but I’m going to attack and eat you.’ ‘ For a week now we have hiked more than 20 miles a day, frequently off trail, in search of the island’s most elusive animal: a carnivore little known to science and unknown to most of the world. The Malagasy people call it a fossa (pronounced foo-sa) and tell bedtime stories of it snatching babies from cribs, extinguishing campfires, and killing coopfuls of chickens with its flatulence alone. ” Be good,” they tell their children, “or the fossa will get you.” (Worse, you may be reincarnated as one.) Scientists call it Cryptoprocta ferox, with taxonomic exactitude, but they know little about it—many have spent years in Madagascar without even glimpsing the animal. Only one thing is certain: On an island often described as an Eden, distinctly lacking in natural violence, the fossa is a striking anomaly. Though it weighs less than a cocker spaniel, it may be the deadliest carnivore, pound for pound, on the planet.

I want to give a shout out to some of the debaters that are graduating this year:
-Osahon is definitely a force in Wisconsin debate and will not be forgotten. He always has a way to make everyone at a tournament loosen up a bit.
-Emily Langhorst has really improved this year, showing everyone that you can have fun and be successful at the same time without killing yourself with a heavy workload.
-Garret Fields is one of the best speakers in Wisconsin debate, and probably gives the best 1AR’s around right now.
-Clint Westbrook and Neethu Iyengar are superbly intelligent, and prove that week in and week out with consistent performances and dedication to the activity.
-Watch out for Laurel and Tim next year. These two have made significant improvements since going into Policy Debate cold feet a couple of years ago. Kudos to Jon Voss for all the work he has done with those two and the passion he elicits from them.
-Ian Miller, what a baller. Who else calls into school sick the entire week before state so they can cut 900 pages of evidence? The transformation he has made in the last year is incredible–and it can only get better from here (assuming he starts marking his cards) ;)

I cant speak for other divisions, but the future of VSS debate in Wisconsin looks bright. The dedication of coaches like Jon Voss, Cori Purri, Bill Batterman, Joe Klopotek ensures that the Wisconsin will still be fielding competitive teams across the country for years to come. I never could have imagined experiencing all that I have in the last 5 years as an assistant coach, and I owe all of that to the debaters that share a passion for this activity, because when it comes down to it–its about you–the students, not us coaches. I hope that is remembered as Wisconsin Debate continues onward.

By Laurel Mills on Dec 11, 2007

  15. Mills, maybe if you’d just TELL your coach where and when you were leaving the hotel, I wouldn’t have to pull my hair out when you’re missing :)

By Jon Voss on Dec 11, 2007

  16. Jon,

Please…. I coach Emily Langhorst and you pull your hair out if you know where she is or not. BTW, I’ll say this now about Ian’s card clipping incident. There are people out there who will always use this against him, and he gave them the ammo so part of that is deserved. But, the truth is that he’s an absolute kickin’ debater who will do very well on the national circuit next year. Don’t forget, this was his first full year of Debate, he was in a play all of last year and could never do after school practice. In one year he got damned good, and my bet is that he comes back twice as good next year. When you take the higher intellectual level he’s at and add the work ethic; all I can say is think about how “spygate” motivated the Patriots.. Congrats to Sheb and Marquette this year. Next year already looks like a dogfight and will be a great way to go out.

  20. Emily, we are SOOOOO doing it again at Blake!

    Marquette BF: 3-1
    Neenah OO: 3-1
    Sheboygan North KM: 3-1
    SPASH IW: 3-1
    Brookfield Central BW: 2-2

    what does blake break to?

By Nick Bubb on Dec 16, 2007

  25. Blake advanced all 4-2 teams to a partial triple octafinal round. I believe both Marquette and Sheboygan dropped.

By Asad on Dec 16, 2007

  26. Asad is correct–both Sheboygan and Marquette lost in trips, and both on split decisions. Going into outrounds, Tim and Laurel were the 21st seed and Garrett and Ben were 34th. I don’t know about Marquette, but Tim and Laurel lost to an affirmative that gave money to the topic region hoping to correct the refugee crisis.

By Jon Voss on Dec 17, 2007

  27. Yeah, we lost to S.F. Lincoln when we were on the neg. They claimed to re-allocate funding so to allow for an increase in aids releaf. They claimed disease, otherization, and biopower.

  29. north gets rid of bubb = best improvement?

By Nick Bubb on Dec 26, 2007

  30. Close.

North gets rid of consult NATO = best improvement

By Jon Voss on Dec 27, 2007

  31. did you ask some one else if that was a good joke prior to posting it?

By Nick Bubb on Dec 28, 2007

  32. I’m not really sure it’s a “joke”, per se; debate is much more educational when teams read arguments that *actually* create clash…
