Thursday Thing to Read: Running for the NFL Council

Jacobi portraitWhen I attended my first NFL National Tournament in 2001, I had the epiphany to become a teacher. I witnessed firsthand what forensics – and in a greater sense, education – could do for young people. After eleven years of coaching and a number of surreal successes, my greatest thrills still come from guiding students who work the hardest just to muster up enough strength to overcome a fear of speaking.

We exist in a world rife with frustration over accountability and funding in our education system. This is a world where budget cuts eliminate programs, coach retirements give way to staffing cuts, or attrition finds few wishing to dedicate inexhaustible energy that has characterized legions of coaches before. As an urban public school educator, I have several speech and theatre classes that have ballooned to 38 students. That’s in addition to coaching extra-curricular forensics, directing plays and volunteering with school and professional committees. The NFL Council can be a voice of advocacy for our discipline and should leverage the wonderful partnerships we make to continue to communicate that objective. The NFL has a promising future of endowments and growth, but we must not lose sight of our existing constituency of coaches “in the trenches” and the students they serve.

I can bring fresh energy to the Council, coupled with a decade of experience coaching every event the NFL offers, while working within an Urban Debate League framework and juggling the challenges of fundraising and traveling. I have also worked in a public relations firm, as a legislative assistant, and as a board member of a local professional theatre company; therefore, I understand how nonprofits work, and how to network to get things done.

As I complete my three-year term as president of one of the several leagues in Wisconsin, I worked to build consensus despite a history of contentious differences. When we merged two state debate tournaments under one banner, the unity of an activity lagging in numbers contributed to growth in participation and pooling of resources. My purpose in any forensic leadership positions I have held in the past eight years is the same: maximizing opportunities for the most children as well as eroding egos of old to make way for cooperation anew. Most importantly I listen: to coaches and students.

Thank you for considering my candidacy,

Monday Meditation: Wisconsin Forensics Tournament of Champions

Posted on February 26, 2008 – 12:09 pm by: Nick Bubb

The Monday Meditation Column is designed to reflect on ideas that we all have after a tournament, reflecting on the events that occurred during the the past weekend. Today’s Monday Meditation comes from a real post-tournament reflection that the James Madison Memorial coaches had after Appleton East’s Tournament.

The suggestion was that we (the Wisconsin Forensics Community) create our own Tournament of Champions and offer this as an additional competition to the Wisconsin Forensics Season. Read more below for more details on this idea. Wisconsin Forensics Daily would like your input as to whether or not this is a good idea.

Monday Meditation: Wisconsin Forensics Tournament of Champions

The idea is to create a small tournament with a large number of high quality competitors. The relatively small size of the tournament would make it easy to attract a significant number of quality judges. This might eliminate concerns that are often expressed about the State tournaments. The goal of this tournament would not be to replace the existing state tournaments, but instead to provide an additional tournament with high quality competitors and judges. This type of experience could be crucial to develop regions of the state where forensics competitions are not often held. For example, a Wisconsin Forensics Tournament of Champions might include Conference Champions and those that reach a “Gold” status at the WHSFA State tournament.

Here’s our tentative thoughts as to how this might work. The WiFTOC would be an invite only tournament. Invites would be given to individuals who have achieved a qualifying leg. A qualifying leg would include: A first place finish at any WFCA/WHSFA tournament provided that individuals are ranked (preference, not points are the basis of comparison) and that a final or power round is held when necessary, a first place finish at any Conference tournament provided that the competitors are ranked, qualification to either NFL or CFL Nationals (in a Wisconsin Forensics Category. e.g. IX and USX would just be extemp, DP would work for both HI or DI. Declamation would work for prose or would not receive a bid.), a “Gold” score at WHSFA State and a final round appearance at the WFCA State tournament. Some categories would be exempt from qualification status. For example, Novice Prose would not qualify some one in prose.

There are several issues that would need to be hashed out. First: Do we really need to offer all of the categories? Of the schools that would be interested in attending this tournament, if it happens, not all of them would be interested in all of the categories. So what happens when we have three people interested in Moments and two in Four-minute? Should we combine them into a greater category? The same thing holds with Play Acting/Duo/Group interp.

Second: how do we get results from all of these contests to varify. WFD and the WFCA does a pretty good job tracking down the WFCA tournaments - but there are WHSFA tournaments that we often don’t get results from. Moreover, conference results are often not reported. Some conferences don’t hold forensics. How should we deal with that?

There are also broader issues involved that need to be discussed. Are schools interested in an experience like this? Would this undermine the WFCA/WHSFA state tournaments? When would this be held to not interfere with the WFCA/WHSFA tournament schedule? Who should host such a tournament? What coaches should be involved in creating the tournament?

Wisconsin Teams Excel at Maine East: Sheboygan North KM in Varsity Finals

Posted on February 24, 2008 – 11:58 pm by: Jon Voss

This weekend, Wisconsin’s varsity and novice policy debate teams left a lasting impression on competitors from across the Midwest.

In the varsity policy division, Sheboygan North’s Tim Knoedler and Laurel Mills enjoyed a 4-2 preliminary record. In elimination rounds, KM defeated teams from Olathe North (KS), Walter Payton (IL), and St. Ignatius (OH) before losing to New Trier (IL) in the final round. In winning their quarter-finals debate, Sheboygan North received a bid to the National Tournament of Champions.

Marquette’s Joe Balistreri and Garrett Fields and Appleton (Kimberton?) East’s Caitlin Peterson and Jessica Stuyvenberg also obtained 4-2 prelim records. Appleton East PS lost their doubles debate to the Kincaid School (TX) and Marquette exited the tournament after losing an octafinal debate to St. Ignatius. Sheboygan North’s Tim Knoedler was the Tournament’s 17th speaker, Marquette’s Joe Balistreri was 4th, and Garrett Fields was 1st.

Wisconsin also made its presence felt in the Novice division. Marquette’s Michael Hoffman and Jack Mackay were the tournament’s 2nd seed with an impressive 6-0 preliminary record. The Hilltoppers defeated Homewood Flossmoor’s Emily Carroll and Laura River in the finals en route to victory. Marquette’s Jack Mackay was 22nd speaker, Sheboygan North’s Brandon Pakkebier took home 11th place honors, and Marquette’s Michael Hoffman was 4th.

Congratulations on a tournament-well-done to all Wisconsin teams in attendance—Marquette, Nicolet, Appleton East, and Sheboygan North—and their respective debaters.
